CAPSTONE

Capstone

Capstone

During the process of creating this website for my capstone, I employed many of the skills I learned at UNL aside from having to learn a few new ones. On day one of creating this website for my capstone, I had to make a plan of what I wanted to create and execute the plan over the course of the semester.

The first step was to outline everything I needed to do. I wanted to build a website that would serve as a portfolio, showcasing the projects I created during my four years at UNL. The body of work I have amassed is a combination of projects from my major and my minor. Tieing the two bodies of work together to demonstrate the connection of my major and minor would be the most important part of this website. I decided the main way I would do this is through a video I would create aside from providing a written description. Before filming the video, I wrote a script and shot list to make life easier when it came time to shoot the video. I came up with 8 different sections of the website so that everything was clearly separated and easy for the user to navigate. And finally, I picked the platform I was going to create the website on. I decided on Wix because of its great templates and low cost for premium upgrades.

Now that I had everything planned out, it was time to get to work. I began with building a rough template of the website and put in all the sections I had decided upon. At this point, the website was a shell. First things first; I needed some photos of myself for the website. I hired my friend who is a professional photographer to take some pictures of me in multiple settings. Since I was still in the photography mindset, I set up a photoshoot on my own for all the paintings I created. I took these pictures with a DSLR and a basic light kit using the photography skills I learned from one of my photography classes at UNL. The photos of the paintings needed to be edited so I did that in photoshop. I spread out the editing process over the course of the semester.  I was by no means a professional in Photoshop, so there were a few learning curves I had to overcome.

After I added all the photos to their respective sections of the website, I created a video that tied my major and minor together. The theme of the script I wrote was to show how what I learned in classes from my minor directly applied to my major. The video was voice-over based, with clips visualizing what I was saying. After the video was edited, I added some copy where needed and it was finished.

Connecting my minor to my major required a good amount of thought. It is very clear to me that the two really went hand in hand. Every class I took, whether it was for my major or my minor, involved audio or video editing. I would be doing multiple video or audio projects at the same time applying the skills I learned from one class to another. I know that I was able to create better work because of the similarities between the two.
